THOUSAND OAKS: 12 Killed in Borderline Bar Mass Shooting

Around 2330, Multiple Law enforcement agencies responded to multiple reports of an active shooter at the Borderline Bar & Grill. VCSO Sgt. Helus, along with an unnamed CHP Officer were first on the scene within 3 minutes of receiving the 911 call. The two made entry into the bar alone when they heard more shots being fired. Sgt Helus was struck multiple times by the shooter. He was rescued by the CHP officer and rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds around 2am. 11 other people were killed in the shooting including a victim who survived the Route 91 Shooting in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017. Some of the victim at the bar who survived were also survivors of the 10/1 mass shooting. The bar is frequented by college students, who on the night in question, were attending the Bar’s “College Night”. There have been multiple reports of people inside the bar rescuing other by breaking windows and pushing people out. Many heroic acts were performed that night by patrons and law enforcement. The city of Thousand Oaks has held memorials for those killed, along with a massive support during the funeral procession throughout Ventura County for the fallen VCSO Sargent. The suspect took his own life inside the bar that night.
