On Thursday afternoon, October 24, 2019, the California Highway Patrol along with the Rialto Police Department and the City of Rialto Fire Department responded to reports of an overturned fuel tanker. The incident occurred around 4:41pm on Riverside Avenue at the westbound I-10 on ramp. The first arriving engine company reported an overturned fuel tanker leaking fuel up against a small sedan. The driver of the semi and the occupants of two sedans were able to escape without injury. Initial reports indicated the semi was hauling 86,000 lbs of gasoline. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the semi to overturn however, strong winds were occurring at the time of the crash. According to a California Highway Patrol incident log, Riverside Avenue, in both directions as well as the eastbound and westbound on and off ramps of the 10 Freeway were expected to be closed until at least midnight while Hazmat crews work to clean up the spilled fuel and upright the tanker.
