12.14.20 | Video by Adam | MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, Manhattan (NYPD) Commissioner Shea – At about 3 pm there was Christmas caroling on the steps behind me (St John’s Divine Cathedral) At that time at 3:45 pm that caroling came to a close. It was about that time at 3:45 pm when shots rang out from an individual, if you look behind me, right in front of the massive stone doors, an individual fired shots. We had a police officer on the scene, we had a community affairs detective from the 26th Precinct almost immediately and engaged the armed perpetrator. We also had an unrelated Sergeant at St. Luke’s hospital around the corner who immediately responded to the scene. We have a total of 15 shots fired by our 3 members of the service. This is preliminary at this time. We have multiple shots fired by the defendant, the defendant at this point was struck at least once in the head and deceased. He was removed to the hospital around the corner. I can tell you so far what we know. We have two firearms recovered. We do not have an account of how many rounds were fired. They are both semi-automatic firearms and are awaiting the crime scene unit to process. Also recovered is a bag belonging to the defendant. Inside this bag is a full can of gasoline, rope, wire, multiple knives, a bible, and tape. I think we can all surmise the ill intentions of this bag. I can tell you from the preliminary body camera that we watched, you see 3 officers acting heroically–the Sergeant, Detective, and Police Officer engaging an armed perpetrator, putting themselves in harms way to pull people who are literally hiding these poles behind me caught in the crossfire. So it is by the grace of God today that we don’t have anyone struck.

Press: Did he yell kill me?
Shea: We have multiple witnesses that were at the scene of the shots fired, multiple witnesses that are telling our detectives he was yelling “Kill me!”

Press: Were the carolers known to the perp?
Shea: The perpetrator is not known to the individuals playing the instruments. He made his way up, people were invited to the church after the music, and that’s when he appeared.
