FLUSHING, Queens – A transformer fire broke in a high rise apartment building leaving hundreds of people in buildings without heat and power. This started around 11 pm, Monday, at Colden St & Cherry Ave, within the confines of the 109 Precinct. The transformer fire caused a carbon monoxide condition. Loud popping noises caused by the transformer fire can be seen outside the apartment building as well as heavy smoke from the ground. 15 people were evacuated. Con-Edison was rushed to the scene. FDNY units stood by as ConEd worked for hours to remove power to the transformer. Around 2 am Tuesday, power was removed and the fire was under control.
