AUBURN, WASHINGTON – Firefighters said a woman and her child were rescued when a fire broke out at a two-story townhome Wednesday night.
Crews from South King Fire and Rescue were called to the building near the intersection of 51st Street and 301st Drive near Auburn at 11:41 p.m. While on the way, firefighters received an update saying a woman and her 2-year-old child were trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived to find a garage fully involved in flames and the fire was quickly spreading to the living area. Crews quickly got water on the fire to buy time for those trapped inside and so firefighters could search the building.
When other firefighters walked around the perimeter of the townhome, they found a woman, with smoke billowing around her, hanging out of a second-floor window. Firefighters said the woman’s 2-year-old was being held by someone outside, but it isn’t yet clear how the toddler was removed from the building. Initial reports said the woman was able to drop her child from a window to a bystander below before firefighters arrived. Firefighters helped the woman climb down a ladder to safety. Both the woman and her child were treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters said the first crew to go inside the building was pushed to the floor by the intense heat and hot steam from the firehose. Eventually, the fire was put out and the rest of the building was searched. No one else was found inside.(KIRO)
