MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIFORNIA – A group of 150-200 people gathered this morning at the Manhattan Beach Pier to combat the racial slurs said by one surfer directed to another surfer of color in the water. The surfer who was called the slur posted to Instagram to share the incident which went viral within the surf community. The organizers shared stories and encouraged others if they see something to say something and don’t be afraid to intervene. The activists gathered from all over Los Angeles to combat the hateful speech said that day and other days in the water. Their goal is to make the surf community more inclusive and open for everyone.
