Early Thursday morning, August 15, 2019, the California Highway Patrol along with Cal Fire / Riverside County Fire and AMR responded to reports of a crash on the freeway with people trapped. The crash was reported around 12:35am on the southbound 15 Freeway, just south of the 68th Street overpass. The first arriving engine company reported a two vehicle crash, one compact sedan down the right embankment and a full size pick-up truck on its side in the center divider. The two occupants in the truck were trapped inside and had to be extricated by firefighters. A Good Samaritan, who stopped to help, was able to pull a small dog from the crash. The Good Samaritan declined to be interviewed on camera, however, he remained at the scene caring for the small dog while Firefighters worked to free its owners from the wreckage. Initial reports indicated the crash may have been caused by motorists braking and swerving to avoid hitting a small boat which was laying in lanes of traffic. Both occupants of the truck were transported to an area hospital. According to a tweet from Cal Fire / Riverside County Fire, the crash resulted in one fatality. The dog was handed over to Officers with the California Highway Patrol and later taken to Riverside County Animal Control.
